The 76ers’ $39M man has been mostly invisible this postseason

Tobias Harris is making $39.3M this season. In four playoff games, he’s scored eight second-half points.

Harris had 35 points total in the first-round series with the New York Knicks, until a 19-point outburst in a 112-106 Game 5 overtime win for the Sixers, who trail the series 3-2. Averaging 10.8 points isn’t ideal, but the second-half disappearances have really hurt in a series where Philly has lost by single digits three times.

Philadelphia gave Harris a five-year max extension in the summer of 2019, after trading for him at the trade deadline months earlier for a package including three first-round picks.

While it wasn’t the worst move of that summer — letting Jimmy Butler go to the Miami Heat and signing Al Horford worked out worse —Harris was paid like an All-Star while never providing the second option to help Joel Embiid in the playoffs.

Philadelphia held onto Harris’ big expiring contract all season in hopes of clearing cap space this summer, instead of trading for a more useful player. That may pay off in the free agent market, and it also might cost them their first-round series.
