Baltimore Ravens Make Major Contract Decision On Key Defender
Jessica Rapfogel-USA TODAY Sports

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens made significant strides, narrowly missing out on a Super Bowl berth after a commendable journey that saw them nearly clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Preserving the strength of their defense became a primary focus this offseason, particularly with the departure of defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. However, the team has secured a vital piece for the future.

The Ravens recently announced the exercise of the fifth-year option on edge rusher Odafe Oweh’s contract, ensuring his presence on the roster for the foreseeable future.

Oweh, a cornerstone of the defense, is poised to fill the void left by the departure of Jadeveon Clowney in free agency.

At just 25 years old, Oweh has already showcased his prowess with five sacks in 13 games last season.

With Clowney’s exit, he is expected to emerge as a linchpin in the team’s pass-rushing arsenal, alongside the returning David Ojabo. Moreover, the Ravens bolstered their defensive line by drafting Oweh’s former college teammate, Adisa Isaac from Penn State, in the third round.

In addition to retaining Oweh, the Ravens secured the services of Kyle Van Noy in free agency, providing stability and a formidable presence on the edge. Van Noy, who enjoyed a career-high nine sacks in 14 games last season, adds depth and experience to the defensive lineup.

As Oweh assumes a more prominent role within the team, all eyes will be on his development, particularly in his quest to become a double-digit sack contributor.

His progression will be pivotal in mitigating the losses of Clowney and standout inside linebacker Patrick Queen, setting the stage for an intriguing storyline in the upcoming season.

The Baltimore Ravens are looking forward to seeing what kind of step forward Oweh can make during the 2024 NFL season.
