How the Packers will utilize each of their new safeties
Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union-USA TODAY NETWORK

Versatility is the word for the Green Bay Packers' safety group. The front office decided to transform the unit, letting Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford walk in free agency. The team signed Xavier McKinney, the top safety of the market, and drafted Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo. Now, the big question is how defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will use each of them.

Scheme

In terms of schematic style, Hafley's defense is single-high heavy. That means a lone safety in the deep part of the field, with the strong safety in the box. The defense might eventually play with two high safeties, but it's not what Hafley prefers — just watch how the San Francisco 49ers play.

Curiously, but probably not coincidentally, all the Packers additions to the room are versatile players. Hafley will have the opportunity to mix them to find the best formations for each situation.

Xavier McKinney

  • Last year's snaps: 464 at FS, 388 at SS, 167 at slot, 82 at DL, 27 at CB

Free safety is McKinney's primary position. He can play everywhere in the secondary, but the Packers are paying him top money for him to play where he is impactful at the highest level. He can play in the box or as a nickel corner eventually — even closer to the line of scrimmage as a blitzer and boundary corner are in his arsenal.

"He's a unique player to come available,” Brian Gutekunst said during league meetings. "He’s 24 years old, one of the top safeties in the game, a guy that can be a game-changing type player. He really fits the criteria we're looking for in a free agent, not only as a player but as a leader back there. Extensively scouted him through college and liked him quite a bit coming out, and he's done nothing in his time in the NFL to change that."

Javon Bullard

  • Last year's snaps: 362 at FS, 144 at slot, 80 at SS, 7 at CB, 3 at DL

Just like McKinney, free safety was Bullard' primary position. However, he plays much more at nickel corner — by the way, nickel was Bullard's primary alignment in 2021 and 2022. He hasn't play much as a box safety, so that's certainly an important consideration. Presumably, the Packers would want a strong safety to play alongside McKinney, but it seems like they went after an interchangeable piece.

"Javon is a spirited, aggressive, smart football player," said Patrick Moore, Packers assistant director of college scouting. "Will definitely raise the level of aggression and competitiveness in our locker room."

Evan Williams

  • Career snaps: 1,172 at SS, 960 at FS, 604 at slot

PFF didn't publish last year's numbers, so we're going with Williams' full college career both at Fresno State, where he played from 2019 to 2022, and at Oregon for his final college season in 2023.

"It took him a while to get used to Oregon, but once he got it down like the second or third game of the year, I thought he took off and looked like the player he was at Fresno," said Sam Seale, Green Bay's national scout. "He's smart, he's instinctive, he's a good kid and he makes tackles. He's always around the ball."

Williams is primarily a box safety, and some view him as a hybrid linebacker type. He can also play as a slot, which led to my comparison with Micah Hyde's style. Williams can become the primary box safety on the roster.

Kitan Oladapo

  • Last year's snaps: 292 at SS, 278 at slot, 174 at FS, 26 at DL, 19 at CB

Oladapo is also a highly versatile piece with a balanced share of reps at each position. Just like Williams, box safety has been his main position, but the second most frequent is slot.

"We're excited to add Oladapo," vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan mentioned. "Played a lot of football. Smart, smart kid, very versatile player."

Oladapo will probably play less as a free safety, complementing what McKinney does best.
